Located 17 minutes south-west of Adelaide, The broadway hotel is a mixture of pub at the front, but also a beer garden in the back that appeals to all ages. Also located near the beach creates a relaxed atmosphere even in the busiest of environments. Walking in, you will most likely enter through the pub which is one of the nicer pubs we have been too due to the architecture of the seating arrangements. There is also a beer garden in side which is slightly difficult to find if you have not been there but provides a different element that just a pub.
The price of the schnitty was quite costly compared to other schnitty’s with $22 for a porterhouse schnitty +$2 for gravy which we are not a fan of as the gravy should be included with the schnitty and not an additional add-on. A chicken schnitty is $2 cheaper but nothing to write home about. The schnitty is served with fresh garden salad with minimal dressing, a handful of chips with its own unique seasoning, a schnitty that was quite small, probably the smallest we have had and lastly piping hot gravy that have a strong flavour that really hits your tastebuds.
The schnitty was pretty average. It was on par with the previous schnitty as the meat was clearly from a butcher that you could probably cook better than the pub. My schnitty was slightly chewy and did not provide that satisfying clean bite like ‘The Maid of Auckland’ provided for a great quality schnitty. That ‘feel good’ bite is when you know that you have hit a golden schnitty. The crumb was quite bland, not real oomph or uniquness that most crumb has and not much of a crunch. Not too sure what they were trying to attempt there but disappointing schnitty from my part. Furthermore, the price compared to the quality was not worth the price. Yet again the lack of chips was a common factor. In earlier schnitty’s we would often leave quite full or struggling to finish our final bites, but this one, we were still hungry which is never satisfying. However, the seasoning made up for the lack of chips. The chips in themselves were not that warm and did not have any crunch they were soft and flat, but the seasoning it was amazing. I would love to know the seasoning recipe as it blows kfc’s herbs and spices out of the park. The redeeming feature once again was the gravy. It was piping hot, a lot of flavour regardless of what gravy that we picked and was well worth the additional $2. There was slightly excess gravy but due to the lack of schnitty then that is understandable.
The service was quite slow compared to most places. The wait was around 15-20 minutes, but we have had the luxury of some places such as the Highway that was ready within 2 minutes tops. The servers who served the food didn’t see as professional as most other places such as handing myself my plate rather than placing it on the table. I am being pedantic, but those subtle differences do show after eating a few schnitty’s over the past year. I won’t be docking points in that case, just something I picked up on. The atmopshere was nice, it was slightly boosted by the part that it was located near the beach and it is peak summer so it adds a whole different element. However, it does have a dining room, a pub, an outdoor area and then a beer garden all cramped into one area which although is cozy, does impact the beach setting. It was be better suited in a suburb closer to the city rather than a beach.
Overall, pretty much a replica food wise to the previous schnitty that was the Tonsley Hotel and Cellars. I wouldn’t get another schnitty here and may go to the beer garden to catch up with mates, but not somewhere I would recommend for food.
